Zen Zenith, lead singer of a San Francisco Bay area band, 7 April 2008

7 April 2008

We spent a good chunk of time exploring the town and meeting people before playing our show at The Boiler Room, a rad rad non-profit coffee shop that exists to serve and support local youth culture. It is potentially one of the coolest places I have ever been to, run by intelligent people with a sense of ownership that seemed really unparalleled. …

We played our cover of the Moldy Peaches song only to discover that – unbeknownst to us -  Kimya Dawson used to be on the Board of Directors for the Boiler Room and that her and the Moldy Peaches shows there had become the stuff of legend! We were blown away and I suddenly felt very self-conscious about our humble cover of such an awesome band’s work.

When we were putting together this tour I tried my very best to book places that were doing things to directly benefit their community and the local art and music scenes since there is nothing we love more than to support that sort of thing. I think we did a pretty good job as every place we played really did do that in one way or another … but The Boiler Room really fits the bill far more than I could have hoped. I wish more places like it existed, especially in our neck of the woods. I can’t even begin to imagine how much Redwood City [California], for example, could benefit from it.
