1/11/10 Staff/Volunteer Meeting Minutes

Volunteer Meeting Minutes 1/11/10 by E.C.

In attendance: Cara Leckenby, Myles Kelety, Justin Bjur, Andy Dahl, Gwen Kramer, Elena Carianna, Ellie Spitzbart, Mysterious Older Couple, Bela O’Dell, Shawn, Lewis Perkin, Steve Boruch, Chauncey Tudhope-Locklear, Rich Finn, Cessna Freund, Cory Ench, Jazzy Archer, Gabriel, Steven Archer, Kitty Gibson, Anna Vendola, Annette Huenke, Richard Sloane, Alex Petitjean

5:05 Reading of Log Book by Cara, leads to the following discussions:
5:10 We’re gonna paint a red or yellow line at the edge of the stage, so people don’t fall off. Apparently this has happened, and is dangerous.
5:17 Steven A. is going to make signs for the tables reminding people to buss their own dishes.
5:19 Computer use: anyone can use the computer for a little while. People using the office computer for extended periods of time for Facebook/Myspace isn’t cool. We’re working on getting a new computer that will be for the public.
5:24 We need more pump pots.

Interns’ Reports
5:26 Ellie- Amazing open mics last week, regular and hip-hop. This Wednesday, first Boileroke @ 8:00, starring Ellie & Koré. No shows this weekend. Dylan Morrison & The Deception play on the 22nd.
5:28 Anna- Focusing on Social Services. Met with Healthy Youth Coalition to talk about drugs and alcohol. Started Tobacco Sessions—meets Thursdays at 3 to talk about why we smoke/don’t. Lotsa training in the coffeeshop.
5:30 Elena- Been having really great training shifts. Currently has commitments from Waterfront Pizza and William James Books to donate every month to the Staff Appreciation drawings. Working on making Writer’s Group better by getting regular leaders—come to the BR on Wednesday at 5 to help her. Organizing a more complete volunteer contact info database. Went with Cara last week to the Rotary Club to present about the BR. Going to the Co-op alcove Tuesday 1/12 and Friday 1/22 to give away coffee & chai samples, talk up the BR, and collect donations. Wanna come? Please?

Manager’s Report
5:35 Remade shift duties list, wanting feedback. Trying to sort out all the business of who is banned and for how long, will post 86 list somewhere discrete when info is sorted out. Wants to revisit Chalkboard Specials and make them exciting again. Cara’s getting her Food Handler’s card tomorrow. Other people need to get theirs!
5:43 Somebody carved a swastika into the wooden counter. What to do? Someone wants us to remember that it used to be a symbol for longevity. Someone says to remember that vandalism is the point, not the swastika. Cara’s idea—have a swastika collage and thoughts about the symbols be our art show for February? ….Then the conversation blew up. To be continued at another meeting later…

Board:
5:58 Steve B.- Board meeting next week 1/18, after staff meeting.
5:59 Cory- Combining a fundraising event with art group this week—painting bowls that will be sold at a soup-eating event. Come help out/have fun making art in a group tomorrow, 1/12 at 3pm!

Community Issues:
6:02 Bela- Could we shoot out people’s cigarettes with a squirt gun? Hmmmm…
6:03 Chauncey- Talk to him about bikes. He may give you a free one if you’re poor enough and you want it bad enough. Also come work on your bike for free with him on Saturdays, 12-6, when he runs a bike co-op.

6:10 Volunteer Drawing! Kiri drawn, but not here. Andy drawn! Whooooo!
