01/04/2010 Staff/Volunteer Meeting Minutes

5:00 Reading of the Log Book by Cara L.
5:10 Log book sparks discussion on drinks made during trainings. Can we give them away? Yes, but you can’t just decide to do drink training whenever you want to give away a drink. Use discretion. Let’s get everyone trained without going broke.
5:15 Log book sparks discussion about the airpot being self serve. Maybe we put the coffee out and keep the cups in the back, so that people can serve themselves but still not steal? Consensus to try that out.
5:20 Log book sparks discussion about people drawing swastikas on the bathroom floor with soap. Solutions could include replacing the squeezy bottle with a dispenser. More importantly, what can we do to help people achieve a greater level of respect for themselves and others?
5:28 Log book sparks discussion about stuff being locked in the office. The office needs to be locked because of confidentiality/legal stuff, and also theft stuff, unfortunately. But we are doing our best to keep everything you might need outside of the office. Volunteer apps are under the counter,

5:37 Passing around the schedule AND the training/tracking sheet, to try and figure out where all the new volunteers are in the training process. Let us know how many training shifts you’ve had, and get us a copy of your food handler’s card pronto!!

Manager’s Report

5:39 If we get in trouble more for smoking, it’ll be BIG trouble. We made little flyers to hand to people who are smoking too close… but will they end up just being litter on the sidewalk? What else can we do? What if they’re smoking in their cars with the window down, is that legal? Cara will ask about that. We discuss various approaches to dealing with smokers. Let’s paint/draw in chalk a smoke-free zone on the ground?

Interns’ Reports

5:45 Elena- Elena and Cara are giving a presentation to the Rotary Club Tuesday, January 5th at noon. // Presentations at the coop alcove on the 12th and 22nd // Steve, our last Skookum volunteer, has found a paying job with the jobskills he developed volunteering here! Now Elena is figuring out how to work with another Skookum client on baking cookies that we will sell alongside Ellie’s. // Elena is going to commit to lead writer’s group until we have someone else. // With all the new volunteers, she is going to update contact information lists and also wants to get all the training packets organized, so please turn them back in.

5:50 Anna- Requests that volunteers please actually go through the training packets with us and ask questions, instead of just skimming through and signing. She’s also transitioning to doing less coffeehouse stuff and more social services stuff, which is exciting. “That’s it, for nowsies!”

5:51 Ellie- Free bike clinic and writer’s group on Wednesday followed by Hip Hop open mic. There’s a band called Callo playing Thurdsay night. Friday AND Saturday will feature Kites at Night. Starting next week, we’re going to have Boileroke (karaoke at the BR) with headlining superstars Koré and Ellie on Wednesday. It will be the second Wednesday of every month at 7. On the 27th of Febuary will be the Snowflake Ball, and sometime in June we’ll have a Prom.

Boards’ Report

5:58 Board meetings are now 3rd Mondays at 6. The next is January 18th. Catska is stepping down as president. Marty Gay has taken over the treasurer’s position.

6:04 Life Issues

6:20 I love the Boiler Room!

For just a dollar a day you can become a BOILERMAKER. Total contributions of $365 or more in any twelve-month period qualify you for the year in which that level is achieved. We will honor your gift of support in our list of BOILERMAKERS on our website, on our donor wall, in our annual report, and by inviting you to special events.
