Position Overview
This position is part of the core group that assures The Boiler Room runs smoothly and is a safe, beneficial and constructive environment for youth and any other customers of the establishment. The primary focus is responsibility for inventory of food and drink products sold in the coffeehouse and to maintain menus and selections appropriate to the season and to customer demand. This position also has primary responsibility to recruit, schedule and train volunteers for the 11:30 to 2 p.m. shifts.
Essential Job Functions
Coffee House Duties
- Take inventory bi-weekly to ensure appropriate supplies of paper products, cleaning supplies and food products such as soda, coffee, dairy, cookies, bagels, syrups, tea, ramen and other food items as needed
- Maintain inventory from established food vendors to prepare items for sale such as Chai, cupcakes, scones, cookies, sandwiches, and soups. Alert manager of shortages prior to next shopping trip
- Complete order form for any needed supplies and provide to volunteer doing pick-up
- Stay within designated budget and maintain two-week supply of items on hand (no back stock)
- Update menus monthly to accommodate seasonal and other agreed upon changes
- Prepare food items (such as Chai, baked-goods and lunch items) for sale
- Monitor demand for non-perishable food items, discuss with manager and adjust ordering practice
- Perform bi-weekly maintenance and cleaning of shelves, storage, and refrigerator, including such duties as defrosting, wiping down, organizing, and throwing old food away
- Assure that kitchen items are stored in accordance with health department code
General Job Functions
- Offer creative and innovative suggestions for growth and for solutions to problems as they arise
- Volunteer for shifts and participate in activities of The Boiler Room as schedule permits
- Recruit for volunteers in the community and train and schedule for assigned shift
- Attend all Intern and Staff meetings and Board meetings as personal schedule permits
- Act as integral part of team in creating a fun, healthy, and safe environment
- Assist with implementation and adherence to all Boiler Room policies and protocols
- Be a positive role model for youth and act as a good-will ambassador for The Boiler Room as you represent the Agency in the community
- After successful completion of three months of service in this position may participate in job rotation program, learning jobs of other interns, including possibly acting as relief manager
Schedule
This position is part-time and nonexempt. With the exception of voluntary shifts, the above duties should be completed within the limits of 9 hours per week. Generally, this internship lasts 3 months with the possibility of a second 3-month period. Due to the unique nature of Boiler Room Internships, involving both volunteer and paid time, interns are scheduled to take two days off and away from all duties each week.
Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Ability or willingness to learn to bake basic goods such as cupcakes, muffins and cookies from boxed mix
- Good cleaning and organizing skills
- Some aptitude for scheduling use of inventory and anticipating future needs
- Basic math skills
- Good communication skills; ability to interact with community, staff, and volunteers responsibly and respectfully
- Passion for and desire to be a part of a mission that fosters youth involvement in the community in a healthy and productive way
