Programs Intern

Job Title: Programs Intern
Supervisor: Boiler Room Manager

Position Overview

As part of the core program group, this position helps assure that The Boiler Room runs smoothly and, as a whole, is a safe, beneficial and constructive service provided for youth and other patrons. The primary focus is for booking, coordinating and promoting artistic, and skills building at The Boiler Room. This position also has primary responsibility to recruit, schedule and train volunteers for the 2p.m. to 6 p.m. shifts.

Essential Job Functions

Art, Skills and Educational Programs

  • Set up and maintain programs in the areas of visual arts, poetry, reading groups, artisan skills, and crafts, communicating and coordinating with special guests to come to the Boiler Room to support these programs
  • Alert special guests about Boiler Room policies, such as Alcohol and Drug Free Facility, etc., as needed
  • Stay apprised of local events that may conflict with Boiler Room activities; coordinate and adjust accordingly
  • Coordinate and collaborate with Music and Social Services Interns and Manager to optimize use of space and programs and schedule events effectively, avoiding conflicts
  • Coordinate with presenters and group leaders to promote participation
  • Be present for events and presentations as needed, helping to set up before and break down afterward
  • Promote and advertise all programs, posting flyers and running newspaper ads as appropriate
  • Update BR website calendar and keep current with all planned events.

General Job Functions

  • Offer creative and innovative suggestions for growth and for solutions to problems as they arise
  • Volunteer for shifts and participate in activities of The Boiler Room as schedule permits
  • Recruit for volunteers in the community and train and schedule for assigned shift
  • Attend all Intern and Staff meetings and Board meetings as personal schedule permits
  • Act as integral part of team in creating a fun, healthy, and safe environment
  • Assist with implementation and adherence to all Boiler Room policies and protocols
  • Be a positive role model for youth and act as a good-will ambassador for The Boiler Room as you represent the Agency in the community
  • After successful completion of three months of service in this position may participate in job rotation program, learning jobs of other interns, including possibly acting as relief manager

Schedule

This position is part-time and nonexempt. With the exception of voluntary shifts, the above duties should be completed within the limits of 9 hours per week. Generally, this internship lasts 3 months with the possibility of a second 3-month period. Due to the unique nature of Boiler Room Internships, involving both volunteer and paid time, interns are scheduled to take two days off and away from all duties each week.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of community networks and contacts
  • Good communication skills; ability to interact with community, staff, and volunteers responsibly and respectfully
  • Good interpersonal skills and good rapport with artists, artisans, community, staff and volunteers
  • Working knowledge of youth programs and understanding of what will appeal to Boiler Room clientele
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Passion for growth-focused programming and desire to bring great experiences to The Boiler Room
  • Passion for and desire to be a part of a mission that fosters youth involvement in the community in a healthy and productive way
