Social Services Intern

Position Overview

As part of the core program group, this position helps assure that The Boiler Room runs smoothly and, as a whole, is a safe, beneficial and constructive service provided for youth and other patrons. The goal is to sponsor and promote interactive and informative programs and services that improve people’s lives, with primary focus in preventing substance abuse and reducing violence in the lives of youth.

 
Essential Job Functions

Social Services

  • Be a positive role model for youth and act as a good-will ambassador for The Boiler Room while representing Boiler Room services to the community
  • Promote and sponsor programs/seminars that promote healthy living, incorporating special guests or groups by inviting them to speak or demonstrate at the events; update BR website calendar with all planned events
  • Educate Boiler Room patrons, volunteers, and staff by maintaining programs through use of existing partnerships. Establish and maintain new partnerships with other service-providers within the community.
  • Endorse other service-providers in the community by organizing joint programs, providing volunteers, and contributing Boiler Room space for their ongoing programs
  • Introduce, provide, and update pamphlets, local contacts and personnel and their office locations; discuss additions and changes at staff meetings or at specific events
  • Facilitate group discussions about social service topics
  • Create surveys and questionnaires to better understand current social services needs and activities
  • Develop monthly themes for social services activities.

 
General Service Functions

  • Offer creative and innovative suggestions for growth and for solutions to problems as they arise
  • Volunteer for shifts and participate in activities of The Boiler Room as schedule permits
  • Recruit/train/retain volunteers from the community
  • Attend all Intern and Staff meetings. Attend board meetings as personal schedule permits.
  • Act as integral part of team in creating a fun, healthy, and safe environment
  • Assist with implementation and adherence to all Boiler Room policies and protocols.
  • Be a positive role model for youth and act as a good-will ambassador for The Boiler Room as you represent the Agency in the community
  • After successful completion of three months of service in this position you may participate in job rotation program. You could have the opportunity to learn the jobs of other interns, including possibly acting as relief manager.

Schedule

This position is part-time and nonexempt. With the exception of 2 volunteer shifts per week, the above duties should be completed within the limits of 12 hours per week. Generally, this internship lasts 3 months with the possibility of a second 3-month period. Due to the unique nature of Boiler Room Internships, involving both volunteer and paid time, interns are scheduled to take two days off and away from all duties each week.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Working knowledge of community networks and contacts
  • Good communication skills; ability to interact with community, staff, and volunteers responsibly and respectfully
  • Good interpersonal skills and good rapport with community, staff and volunteers
  • Passion for working with people and bringing out the best in them through healthy and socially-minded growth activities
  • Passion for and desire to be a part of a mission that fosters youth involvement in the community in a healthy and productive way
  • Able to maintain a professional attitude
