Position Overview
As part of the core program group, this position helps assure that The Boiler Room runs smoothly and, as a whole, is a safe, beneficial and constructive service provided for youth and other patrons. The primary focus is volunteer relations, recruitment, training, scheduling, placement and recognition.
Volunteer Coordination
- Foster the importance of courteous, prompt and reliable service with all volunteers, helping them to embody the spirit of the Boiler Room’s mission and to understand the policies so they can provide good service under pressure
- Attend/participate in professional and community meetings (e.g. Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Elks, and youth organizations) to promote the BR to potential volunteers; Recruit volunteers through ads, postings and word of mouth
- Review and screen applications and conduct interviews for potential volunteers
- With assistance from manager, create job duties sheets for different volunteer roles
- Coordinate staff and volunteer appreciation and team building activities
- Arrange for and/or provide on-the-job and growth/development training for volunteers; coordinate the preparation and maintenance of procedural and training manuals
- Take the lead on writing the quarterly BR newsletter
- Maintain a computer database of volunteer names, basic demographic information including addresses, phone numbers, hours worked and roles fulfilled
- Update Boiler Room website calendar and keep current with all planned events.
General Service Functions
- Offer creative and innovative suggestions for growth and for solutions to problems as they arise
- Volunteer for shifts and participate in activities of The Boiler Room as schedule permits
- Recruit for volunteers in the community and train and schedule for assigned shift
- Attend all Intern and Staff meetings and Board meetings as personal schedule permits
- Act as integral part of team in creating a fun, healthy, and safe environment
- Assist with implementation and adherence to all Boiler Room policies and protocols
- Be a positive role model for youth and act as a good-will ambassador for The Boiler Room as you represent the Agency in the community
- After successful completion of three months of service in this position may participate in job rotation program, learning jobs of other interns, including possibly acting as relief manager
Schedule
This is a full-time Americorps position.
Requirements
- Working knowledge of community networks and contacts
- Good communication skills; ability to interact with community, staff, and volunteers responsibly and respectfully
- Good interpersonal skills and good rapport with artists, artisans, community, staff and volunteers
- Working knowledge of youth programs and understanding of what will appeal to Boiler Room clientele
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Passion for growth-focused programming and desire to bring great experiences to The Boiler Room
- Passion for and desire to be a part of a mission that fosters youth involvement in the community in a healthy and productive way.
